Benson, Michigan Lawmakers Travel to Selma for 61st Jubilee and March on the Edmund Pettus Bridge

Over the weekend, Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson led a group of Michigan lawmakers on a trip to Selma for the 61st Jubilee and march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Every year, Benson travels to Selma to march and recommit to continuing the work of the Civil Rights Movement. This year, Benson was joined by State Reps. Morgan Foreman, Amos O’Neal, Carrie Rhenigans, Erin Byrnes, Jason Hoskins, and Veronica Paiz.

“Every year, I go back to Selma for the Anniversary of Bloody Sunday to recommit to continuing the work of the Civil Rights movement as I have throughout the course of my career. I was honored to be joined by a group of Michigan lawmakers and got to show them around Montgomery and Selma and share this experience,” said Secretary Benson.

On Sunday, Benson and the lawmakers visited the Viola Liuzzo memorial, attended church services at Tabernacle Baptist Church where Governor Wes Moore spoke, and then followed in the footsteps of Civil Rights leaders walking from Brown Chapel AME Church across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Ahead of Sunday, Benson showed Michigan lawmakers around Birmingham and Montgomery, where she began her career investigating white supremacist groups undercover.

On Friday in Birmingham, Benson and lawmakers met with former Senator and gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones at 16th Street Baptist Church, where he spoke about prosecuting the 16th Street Baptist Church bombers.

On Saturday in Montgomery, Benson and lawmakers visited the Rosa Parks Museum, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the state Capital.
