PRESS RELEASE

Jocelyn Benson Joins Detroit Federation of Teachers, Highlights Her Plan to Transform Education System

Tonight, Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson met with the Detroit Federation of Teachers and shared her plan to reform Michigan’s public education system. Joined by local educators, Jocelyn outlined how her administration will work to provide every child in Michigan with access to a world-class education that prepares them for the future.

As the daughter of two public school teachers, a former educator, and a mom of a 9 year old, getting this issue right for the next generation of Michiganders is personal for Jocelyn.

“I see my parents and my loved ones in the eyes of all of you, and as governor, I will show up every day to ensure, among other things, that our teachers and our educators in the public education system are getting paid what you deserve,” said Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. “I want to ensure every new teacher in the state has a starting salary of $60,000, in addition to ensuring you have wrap-around services for everything from additional support to professional development to resources to meet the needs of your kids in your classrooms. And I say that because I sat in the back of those classrooms, watching my parents fight for those resources, and got involved in politics so that I could ensure that we are using every tool possible to invest in you. That's why having an educator in the governor's office is so important.”

As Governor, Jocelyn would support Michigan’s kids from birth through graduation — preparing young Michiganders to compete with young people from top-performing education systems across the country and globe. Her education plan features five pillars:

  • Pillar 1: Establish a world-class education for every Michigan child

  • Pillar 2: Recruit, pay, and keep great educators

  • Pillar 3: Start strong – Birth through Pre-K

  • Pillar 4: Fund schools equitably, efficiently, and transparently

  • Pillar 5: Make the system work together
