PRESS RELEASE

Jocelyn Benson Rolls Out Energy Affordability Plan with Michiganders and Elected Leaders in Saginaw and Detroit

Today, Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson unveiled her energy affordability agenda with events in Saginaw and Detroit.

At a time when Michigan residents pay some of the highest heat and electricity bills in the nation, Benson’s plan will finally put people before corporate profits. As governor, Jocelyn will end the unfair rate hikes, create well-paying union jobs, reform the rate-setting process, and invest in a clean energy future for Michigan. This is the third plank of Benson’s affordability agenda that highlights her laser focus to lower costs for Michiganders.

“It's no wonder that Michigan residents are frustrated they have more power outages than any other state in the Midwest, and they pay some of the highest heat and electricity bills too,” said Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. “That's why one of my first acts as governor will be to end these unfair rate hikes that go through without any guarantee that we're going to see less power outages. And we're going to also build our way to lower bills. Because it's not just about ending these unfair rate hikes. We also need residents to have more money in their pockets. Our bills should be going down and not up.”

In Saginaw, Benson joined Saginaw Mayor Brenda Moore and Michiganders concerned about high electricity bills for a press conference on Jocelyn’s plan to lower energy costs for Michiganders.

“The costs of electricity and utilities are skyrocketing. We’re being asked to pay more and more,” said Mayor Brenda Moore. “Today we have a candidate who is looking at improving those things that are plaguing our area, and that young lady has walked the streets, been in our community, and she also does all that she can to help us get to the next point.”

In Detroit, Benson,  State Senator Stephanie Chang, State Representatives Morgan Foreman, Tonya Myers Phillips, and other community leaders discussed her energy affordability plan during the roundtable conversation.

We know there's so many people across our state who are struggling to make ends meet, and we see rate increase after rate increase from some of our energy companies here in Michigan,” said State Senator Stephanie Chang. “It's really important that we have a leader who is going to tackle this issue head on, and also someone who has a really strong track record of not being afraid to handle some really tough things. Jocelyn and I have known each other for almost two decades, and so I'm just thrilled that she's running for governor, and so proud to support her.”
