Winnie Brinks and Sen. Greene Hear from Community Members Facing Rising Costs Under “John James Tax”

Today, Senate Majority Leader and Democratic Nominee for Lieutenant Governor Winnie Brinks and state Senator Chedrick Greene heard from Saginaw residents facing higher costs thanks to the latest “John James Tax” and shared the Benson-Brinks plan to lower costs and help residents survive these tax hikes. Jocelyn and Winnie are the only ticket with a comprehensive plan to make it easier to build a life, from lowering costs to diversifying our economy.

With the cost of healthcare, housing, and energy through the roof, Michiganders need relief. But, instead of working to lower costs, John James backed tariffs on our closest trading partner and ally – hiking up the price of everyday essentials and costing Michigan families an extra $5,600 this year. Michigan deserves leaders who are focused on driving down costs, not raising them.

“The contrast with our opponents in the James campaign is very clear. He supported, with enthusiasm, the tariff policy that the President has pursued, and that has really made a negative impact on households throughout our nation. But it's particularly damaging in places like Michigan, where we've seen the costs of everything go up — from groceries, to housing, to gas. We just drove past a gas station, and gas was $4.59,” said Winnie Brinks. “The other thing is the Big Beautiful Bill. I call it the Big Ugly Bill. It's really done a number on healthcare costs, not only impacting those Medicaid recipients that we have a lot of in Michigan, but also removing the ability of people to pay for healthcare because of the subsidies that used to be provided under the Obamacare provisions. So we're seeing time after time, Republicans like John James just make life harder and more expensive.”
