STATEMENT: Jocelyn Benson Calls on John James and Donald Trump to Suspend Federal Gas Tax and End Iran War

Today, as gas reaches $5/gallon and diesel prices are at record levels because of Donald Trump and John James’ Iran War, Secretary of State and Democratic Nominee for Governor Jocelyn Benson released the following statement:

“Donald Trump and John James’ Iran War has spiked gas prices to record levels. That’s why I’m calling for the immediate suspension of the federal gas tax, as well as a swift end to the Iran War. Michigan families need relief at the pump. Congress should immediately return to session and remain in session until a federal gas tax holiday is passed.

“But let’s be clear: suspending the federal gas tax could bring relief, but it won’t solve the problem. Prices will still be too high as long as this war, that John James just voted in support of a mere two days ago, continues.

“Trump started this disaster, and if he and John James want to lower costs — they need to end it. That’s why I’m calling on the federal government to suspend its tax, not the state of Michigan. Suspending the state gas tax would only blow a hole in our budget, force us to forgo necessary road repairs, and hurt Michigan families. It’s a risk we cannot take — and one we should not have to, as Michigan did not start this war, Donald Trump did.

“Michigan families need relief now. The federal government should immediately deliver it and end this disastrous war.”
