Jocelyn Benson Dominates First Days of General Election

On Wednesday, Secretary of State and Democratic Nominee for Governor Jocelyn Benson kicked-off the general election with events in Detroit and Lansing, where she earned the endorsements of Democratic Governors Association (DGA) Chair and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and DGA Vice Chair Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Together, they discussed Jocelyn’s plan to make Michigan more affordable and outlined the stakes of the election: who will the next governor work for? The people? Or Donald Trump? 

Jocelyn’s landslide victory in Tuesday’s primary, with a record-breaking 1.2 million votes, and Wednesday’s endorsements dominated the conversation in the first days of the general election. Unlike her Republican opponent, Jocelyn entered the general election with a historic $6.4 million warchest and a grassroots coalition that turned out in record numbers – she’s ready to win in November.

WXYZ — Detroit, MI: Well, we've just heard from the winner in the democratic race for Michigan Governor. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson beat Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson with 83% of the vote…Here's what Benson told supporters a short time ago: “I know how important it is to build a Michigan and a Kentucky and other states where kids want to live. Where our kids feel that they can see themselves in the economy of tomorrow, and they can afford to live here…I'm very proud of our landslide victory in the primary and I look forward to another landslide victory in the fall.”

WLAJ-TV — Lansing, MI: Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson held a campaign event this afternoon and she was joined by a special guest, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who announced her endorsement for Benson for Governor. Benson, Michigan's Secretary of State, cruised to victory in the Democratic gubernatorial primary…Benson thanked Whitmer for her leadership and outlined her campaign priorities: lowering costs, growing the economy, and protecting rights and freedoms.

WJBK-TV — Detroit, MI: Take a look at this video here. Jocelyn Benson, already hot on the campaign trail, she made an appearance over at a small business in Detroit with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. He's also the head of the Democratic Governors Association, he strongly backed her. Remember, Benson beat Chris Swanson with over 80% of the vote.

With that said, what it shows is how much voters want leaders who will simply make their lives easier, who will save them time, and save them money, which I've done as Secretary of State. [..] I also run the Department of Motor Vehicles and I've transformed how that works to actually be an efficient way to deliver services. And in addition to that, I've stood unafraid to protect every single right of every single citizen in this state. And governors, in this moment, are those guardrails for our economy, for our democracy. What I think you saw in our primary is voters recognizing that and supporting me: someone who has stood firm and unwavering in support of their rights, their vote, and also to make their lives a little bit easier when they come to the Secretary of State office. That's what people want from leaders right now. People who will drive down costs, stand up to bullies, fight corruption and fight for them,” said Benson.

WDIV-TV — Detroit, MI: Benson visited a local bakery in Detroit earlier this morning. She was joined by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. Benson talked about the importance of supporting small businesses, and that will be a priority if she is elected. 

MS NOW — New York City, NY: “We're all unified around our desire to make Michigan a place where you can afford to live and build a career and thrive. Frankly, the number one thing I hear from folks all across the state, and I'm sure every other candidate is hearing the same thing, is how high costs have gotten. From prescription drugs, to housing costs, to utility bills, to the cuts to medicare and medicaid, and all the fears of not being able to afford to live in a state like ours where wages have been stagnant and costs are going up. [...] So, we as candidates, all up and down the ticket, are focused on that issue which we know is top of mind for so many citizens in our nation and also, frankly, in many cases, a direct result of the failed and chaotic economic policies of the Trump administration. So we're all thinking the same thing, and singing the same song,” said Benson.
