Jocelyn Benson Tours Detroit Public School, Shares Plans to Transform Education in Michigan

Today, Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson joined Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti for a tour of Palmer Park Preparatory Academy in Detroit. Jocelyn met with teachers, administrators, and students, sharing her plan to reform the education system so that every child in Michigan has access to a world-class education that prepares them for the future.

“My education vision will guarantee that every kid is career or college ready when they graduate from a K-12 public school. And to get there, we need more resources, but we also need more support for our educators – we need wraparound services for our teachers and our students. It’s going to take a comprehensive vision to overhaul our schools,” said Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. “You need a governor who’s going to lead with a sense of urgency, which I am. I got involved in public service because my parents were public school teachers, and I saw how important it was that political leaders know how to improve our classrooms and are committed to doing so with urgency. But in addition to that, I’m a mom, and I know every day that we don’t fix this for our kids and teachers is a day lost that we won’t get back for their childhoods.”

As Governor, Jocelyn would support Michigan’s kids from birth through graduation — preparing young Michiganders to compete with young people from top-performing education systems across the country and globe. Her education plan features five pillars:

  • Pillar 1: Establish a world-class education for every Michigan child

  • Pillar 2: Recruit, pay, and keep great educators

  • Pillar 3: Start strong – Birth through Pre-K

  • Pillar 4: Fund schools equitably, efficiently, and transparently

  • Pillar 5: Make the system work together
