PRESS RELEASE

SEIU Endorses Jocelyn Benson for Governor

Today, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Michigan endorsed Jocelyn Benson as the next Governor of Michigan. The union is one of the largest in the state, representing over 66,000 Michigan healthcare workers, janitors, security officers, and other essential service workers across healthcare and key sectors of the economy.

“While our members care for the public, we need someone in Lansing to look out for them – to lower their costs, raise their wages, and protect their rights and freedoms,” said Charlesetta Wilson, President of SEIU Healthcare Michigan. “We know Jocelyn Benson. We know when she says something, she’ll get it done because she did it as Secretary of State. She has demonstrated that she’ll be a champion for our members and for all Michigan workers — and that’s why we’re proud to endorse her and fight with her as she leads our state into a brighter, more affordable future.”

“Too often working people are asked to do more while costs keep rising and paychecks don’t go far enough. That’s why we’re proud to support Jocelyn Benson for governor. She’s proven she can win tough fights, delivering tangible results by cutting red tape and ensuring government works for people, not just special interests,” said Brandice Mullen, Vice President of SEIU Local 1. “Jocelyn understands that everyone who works hard deserves dignity, fair wages, and safe workplaces. As governor, we know she’ll fight for us and every single Michigander.”

“SEIU members perform critical work across Michigan: caring for patients and seniors, rebuilding infrastructure, and keeping our communities safe and running. I’m honored to have their support, and I’ll fight every day to ensure they can earn a living wage that enables them to support their families,” said Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson. “Michiganders deserve a leader focused on making sure everyone can prosper, and I won’t hesitate to take on anyone — no matter how powerful — who threatens Michiganders’ safety. Together, we can make Michigan a place where everyone can thrive.”

SEIU Michigan is the latest to join a growing coalition of state and local leaders, nonprofits, and advocacy organizations supporting Benson to be Michigan’s next governor including the United Auto Workers, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951, the majority of Michigan Teamsters (including locals 1038, 406, 243, 283, and 247), Michigan Laborers District Council, Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters, Michigan Nurses Association, UNITE HERE Local 24, Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, among others.
