Benson Meets with Educators, Tours Postsecondary Education Schools, Highlights Importance of Supporting Special Education

Today, gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson toured the Macomb Community College M3 Facility, the Rising Stars Academy, and then hosted a roundtable with educators and local leaders to discuss ways the next governor can better support our teachers and set students up for success in the job market.

As the daughter of two public school special education teachers and a member of Michigan’s AFT, Jocelyn knows firsthand just how critical it is for educators to have a seat at the table. Growing up watching her parents advocate for their fellow educators and students and seeing their voices go unheard is part of the reason Jocelyn was inspired to get involved in public service and why she's committed to building a world-class education system that gives every Michigander – no matter their ability – a fair shot to learn, work, and thrive.

“My parents were special education teachers and so for me, this is why I got into public service, because I saw firsthand how their voices were unheard,” said Secretary Benson. “As governor, my commitment is to make sure you're at this table with me and my job is to fight on your behalf and to work with our allies in the legislature to be effective. Our kids deserve it. Our educators deserve it.”
