Yesterday, Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson won the Democratic Nomination to be the next Governor of Michigan in a landslide victory – securing 84% of the vote, and receiving the most votes of any candidate in a statewide primary in Michigan history. 

The decisive victory is making news across the state and the nation as a strong entrance into the general election – with many pointing to her record-breaking warchest and primary vote toll as advantages over her broke two-time loser Republican opponent John James. Michiganders were loud and clear: they want a battle-tested fighter who is prepared to lower costs and raise wages, and unlike her Republican opponent, a leader that works only for the people – not lobbyists, not the highest bidder, and not Donald Trump.

Before we get to some sound, I just want to tell you that she came out to this great hype song … she’s so excited, she’s energetic. She is 48 years old, she has run 40 marathons...and one of those marathons she ran, she was 8 months pregnant. This woman is a powerhouse. She is ready for November.

WLAJ-TV: It was a celebratory atmosphere here inside the Garden Theater, but the party has ended and all of those people that were in attendance have their eyes on the election in November. That's certainly been the attitude of the Benson campaign so far… As you mentioned, this race was called shortly after polls closed in the U.P. just after 9 p.m., and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson called it a landslide victory, one that they hope to build upon and replicate in November.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has easily won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, defeating Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

Republicans will have to figure out how to single-handedly tackle Benson, who enters with more money on hand and without the baggage of facing the primary attacks that Republicans have been levying at each other for months. 

Three recent polls show Benson winning over both James and Johnson, though her margins were wider over Johnson than James. However, some in the Republican Party, including consultant Dennis Lennox, have argued that Johnson’s access to significant self-funding and his grassroots momentum would do more to boost down-ballot candidates in the state legislature than James would.

Right now, Benson has roughly 300K more votes than all of the GOP candidates combined. 

Dem turnout is at least 350K higher than 2018 when Dems swept statewide offices.

Zach Gorchow, Gongwer Michigan: Current total vote in the Dem governor primary: 1,378,268

Current total vote in the Republican governor primary: 882,802

That's a massive gap, almost 500,000 votes. Wow.
