PRESS RELEASE

Jocelyn Benson Joins SEIU Homecare Nurse on the Job, Shares Plan to Raise Homecare Wages

Today, Secretary of State and Democratic nominee for Governor Jocelyn Benson joined SEIU in Flint for their “Walk a Day in our Shoes” program. Jocelyn joined a homecare nurse on the job and spoke with staff about the struggles facing homecare workers and their patients, and how the next governor can best help.

Right now, too many Michigan families are struggling under the rising cost of healthcare — including homecare. The next governor has a moral obligation to ensure that our healthcare workers are supported and that care is affordable and accessible for the families that need it. That’s why Jocelyn will pass a $5,000 caregiver tax credit to help families cover the cost of caring for a loved one. Jocelyn is the only candidate in this race who will fight to protect workers, create well-paying union jobs, and lower costs for everyone in Michigan.

“One of my goals as governor is going to be to drive down costs and create more well-paying union jobs for people all throughout our state. Because I know how hard the people of Michigan work to make ends meet, and we need to do right by them. And a union helps that. A union helps ensure they get good wages and also have a community of people that they're fighting in solidarity with.” said Jocelyn Benson. “One of the things I was really struck by today is how hard Christine works to care for her family, to provide that healthcare, and she does it on her own. Without a union to have her back, to fight for her, and to make sure she knows she's part of something bigger than her, it would be hard to sustain what she does.”
